Nothing is behind a paywall. There is no subscriber-only tier, no gated archive, and no content that a payment unlocks.
WHAT A PAID SUBSCRIPTION IS
A paid subscription is an expression of support for work that is already being given away. It is voluntary. It does not purchase access to anything, because nothing is withheld, and it does not commit us to produce any particular amount of future work, on any particular schedule, or to continue publishing at all. If you would like to support the work, that is what the subscription is for.
If you would not, you lose nothing: read for free.
PRICES
$5 per month, or $55 per year. A founding tier, Tiger Cage Insider, is available at $140 per year and above. All prices are in US dollars, and the price shown at checkout is the price charged.
Subscriptions purchased inside the Substack iOS app are priced separately by Apple and are shown at $7 per month and $75 per year; those purchases are handled by Apple, and Apple’s refund process applies to them.

Write to us about anything: a charge you do not recognize, a subscription you cannot cancel, a correction, or a complaint.
CANCELLATION
You can cancel at any time, yourself, at substack.com/settings — open Subscriptions, choose this publication, and select Cancel subscription. There is no cancellation fee and no notice period. Because no content is gated, cancelling costs you no access whatsoever: you go on reading everything, for free, exactly as before. If you would rather we cancelled it for you, email the address above and we will.
REFUNDS
If you want your money back, email us and we will refund it. Any time, no deadline, and no explanation required. We take this position because you were never charged for access to anything — the writing was free before you paid and it is free afterwards — so there is nothing for us to claw back and no reason to argue with you about it.
Refunds are issued to the original payment method and are processed through Substack, our payments and subscription platform. Allow five to ten business days for the money to appear, depending on your bank.
DISPUTES
If something has gone wrong with a charge, email us first. We can almost always fix it faster than a bank dispute can, and we will not make you argue for it. If you still wish to dispute the charge with your card issuer, we will respond to the issuer with our records of the subscription and any correspondence.
PROMOTIONS
Discounted or promotional rates apply for the period stated at checkout and renew at the standard rate afterwards unless cancelled. Any other terms of a specific promotion are stated in the offer itself.
DELIVERY
This is a digital publication. Posts arrive by email and are published on the website; new work appears at irregular intervals and no schedule is guaranteed. There is nothing physical to ship, so there is no shipping charge and no returns process.
